Recognizing the Real Fear
by Erich Fromm

[Listen to Audio! New!]

In the sphere of human relations, faith is an indispensable quality of any significant friendship or love. “Having faith” in another person means to be certain of the reliability and unchangeability of his fundamental attitudes, of the core of his personality, of his love. By this I do not mean that a person may not change his opinions, but that his basic motivations remain the same; that, for instance, his respect for life and human dignity is part of himself, not subject to change. […]

To have faith requires courage, the ability to take a risk, the readiness even to accept pain and disappointment. Whoever insists on safety and security as primary conditions of life cannot have faith; whoever shuts himself off in a system of defense, where distance and possession are his means of security, makes himself a prisoner. To be loved, and to love, need courage, the courage to judge certain values as of ultimate concern – and to take the jump and to stake everything on these values. […]

Is there anything to be practiced about faith and courage? Indeed, faith can be practiced at every moment. It takes faith to bring up a child; it takes faith to fall asleep; it takes faith to begin any work. […]

The practice of faith and courage begins with the small details of daily life. The first step is to notice where and when one loses faith, to look through the rationalizations which are used to cover up this loss of faith, to recognize where one acts in a cowardly way, and again how one rationalizes it. To recognize how every betrayal of faith weakens one, and how increased weakness leads to new betrayal, and so on, in a vicious circle. Then one will also recognize that while one is consciously afraid of not being loved, the real, though usually unconscious fear is that of loving. To love means to commit oneself without guarantee, to give oneself completely. Love is an act of faith, and whoever is of little faith is also of little love.

Another way to see Brevity

Billy Graham mentioned in his speech at Ted about "The brevity of Life" Today's Reading reminded me of that thought.

You are reading from the book Touchstones

Within every man there is the reflection of a woman, and within every woman there is the reflection of a man. Within every man and woman there is also the reflection of an old man and an old woman, a little boy and a little girl.
-- Hyemeyohsts Storm

This Cheyenne teaching reminds us of our connections - inside ourselves and with other people. Reading this passage, we are seeing it partly with the eyes of that small child who first learned to read. And perhaps, looking in the mirror today, we can see the traces of the old men we are becoming. We have been close to our mothers or sisters or lovers and have found parts of ourselves in them. By gently welcoming the children we once were, the old men we will be, the part of us that has a woman's outlook, we become wiser, stronger, and more spiritual.

We don't need to be frightened or disrespectful of the parts of ourselves that don't feel 100 percent virile. We can have virility and many other sides too. Such awareness creates peace with ourselves.

I will notice the reflection of small children in old faces, old people in children's faces, and men and women in each other.

President Obama's Saturday Address

From www.Truthout.org

Barack Obama delivered his first weekly address to the American people Saturday: "We begin this year and this Administration in the midst of an unprecedented crisis that calls for unprecedented action. Just this week, we saw more people file for unemployment than at any time in the last twenty-six years, and experts agree that if nothing is done, the unemployment rate could reach double digits. Our economy could fall $1 trillion short of its full capacity, which translates into more than $12,000 in lost income for a family of four. And we could lose a generation of potential, as more young Americans are forced to forgo college dreams or the chance to train for the jobs of the future. In short, if we do not act boldly and swiftly, a bad situation could become dramatically worse."

You are reading from the book Today's Gift

Muddy water, let stand, becomes clear.
--Lao-tzu

A group of friends went swimming one day and one of them lost a ring in the bottom of the lake. Everyone started diving from different directions to find it until there was so much mud and sand stirred up that no one could see anything. Finally, they decided to clear the water. They waited silently on the edge of the shore for the mud from all their activity to settle. When it finally cleared, one person dove in slowly and picked up the ring. When we are confused about something in our lives, we will often hear answers and advice from all directions. Our friends will tell us one thing and our families another, until we feel pretty well mixed up. If we look away from our problem and let patience and time do their work, the mud inside us will settle and clear. Our answer will become visible, like the glimmer of silver in the water.

Am I overlooking the simple solution?

I doubt them

Illuminate me with Truth, Don't Try to Confound me with more Lies. The Bush Administration might be out of the White House but they are not out of Power. Take the Wall Street Journal Opinion from William McGurn Bush's Real Sin was Winning in Iraq, dated January 20, 2009.

I will retort again, Lie's can't hide. Truth doesn't need to. Excellence lasts!

This is my attempt, to counter balance their deliberate collective conscious coercion with, my doubt.

Anyone care to join my doubt?

The Question of Deception

My thought began as a quest for the negative impact of deception, soo, I typed into my browser, Being forced to believe something that is not true and its effects on the psychology,

Dangerous Ideas Steven Pinker was the immediate result. It was his preface writing for the book "What is your Dangerous Idea" by John Brockman with an afterword by Richard Dawkins.

As simple as it would be to copy and paste his words, you can hyperlink to it directly by clicking on Dangerous Ideas thereby being allowed to peruse it with pleasure at your leisure.

This paragraph is plucked to continue my inquiry for today:

"Should we treat some ideas as dangerous? Let's exclude outright lies, deceptive propaganda, incendiary conspiracy theories from malevolent crackpots, and technological recipes for wanton destruction. Consider only ideas about the truth of empirical claims or the effectiveness of policies that, if they turned out to be true, would require a significant rethinking of our moral sensibilities. And consider ideas that, if they turn out to be false, could lead to harm if people believed them to be true. In either case, we don't know whether they are true or false a priori, so only by examining and debating them can we find out. Finally, let's assume that we're not talking about burning people at the stake or cutting out their tongues but about discouraging their research and giving their ideas as little publicity as possible."

Silent Treatment, or lack of interaction for the sake of power over someone else. Have you ever been ostracized for disagreeing? Have you ever been outcast for being/thinking different?

Do you know what it is like to be Raped? For the purpose of being Shaped? Have you ever heard of B. F. Skinner & Classical Conditioning? Neutral Conditioning? Have you ever been called Delusional? Hallucinatory? Has the word Schizophrenia ever been bandied around you by pop psychologists who extol the virtues of the Bible? Are Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, and The Tooth Fairy Real Beings? Nope, they are mythological figures used to drive economic forces on schedule. And yet despite transfers of wealth, there is a psychological need that has been created which didn't exist before Macy's Parades, and Hallmark Holiday's. What's not to like about Giving? There are Reasons to Believe which invariably will cause one to smile.

Then the thought moves to childhood fantasies being early training for adult subterfuge, deception, betrayal; an early form of the lesson, "Hey, I Lied get over it!" or "I'm sorry" or "Forgive me" or "Grow up, these are Big Boy Rules" or ♫Welcome to the Machine♫♪

During our short experience with the cycle of Day into Night, Night into Day we somehow hope to be an appreciated participant in this incredible activity. Some of us want others to know we were here. Others just want to live as they see fit, despite being told the contrary.

For Example This Gem of an Ending of Disbelief

Resurrection Happens

TED Talks Surgeon and author Sherwin Nuland discusses the development of electroshock therapy as a cure for severe, life-threatening depression -- including his own. It’s a moving and heartfelt talk about relief, redemption and second chances.

A Trip, Within

Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions -- motion, speech, self-awareness -- shut down one by one.

What's the one thing?

70 Days Ago, 30 sailors in 30, 60 foot boats set sail for a 28,000 mile race around the world against the trade winds. 12 sailors with 12 boats remain. The Vendee Globe Flotilla has rounded Cape Horn and are now in the South Atlantic heading North. The Lead vessel Foncia Skippered by Desjoyeaux Michel is 3604.2 nautical miles from the finish.

However, 12th ranked Nauticsport-Kapsch Skippered by Sedlacek Norbert is 6897.1 nautical miles away from the lead, near Cape Horn.

Meanwhile Fatah, Hamas And Israeli Defense Forces have declared a Cease Fire in Gaza.

In 2 days we have a Presidential Inauguration which must unify 300 million people who disagree on alot of things some of which are silly, some of which are serious but all still divisive. How does one get all to move forward as one, for all? Cliche's quickly surface to answer that constant challenge; "There's no I in Team" See the difference between Illness and Wellness, I versus We.

Oversimplifications for sure which run counter to the thought of the Power of One, the incredible value of the Individual, Each of us is unique and will remain so but, to do so in unison with others is the trick.

As long as lying, cheating, stealing, and sabotage are viewed as tools to achieve agendae, the populace will not experience Common Good, The Few will benefit at the cost of many.

What Common Cause can we all agree to? A Safer World? Clean Water? Clean Air? A childhood without gunfire? Explosions? Sexual assault? Physical abuse? Hunger? Thirst? Preventable Disease? Life is not painless it just shouldn't be painful. A Day without pain is a day without Life. Think about it!!! What about a day without Joy? Hmm, that doesn't happen, there is always something worth smiling about and I say this after going through some pretty miserable times, which didn't seem so bad when someone said something nice to me. Think about it !!!

Their words were salve for my spirit.

How does a race into the wind, a military ceasefire, a change in leadership due to democratic process fit together? All this occurred on this itty bitty water covered rock orbiting with powers unseen. It's the one thing we all have in Common Good,

We Share Earth

Good I'm not the only Disbeliever

Good I'm not the only disbeliever of last night's Goodbye speech, To me the lie's were brazen, the contempt impugn, these past 8 years were better in his words than in my eyes, ears and memory.

I saw fraud , he saw bailout.

I remember Donald Rumsfeld saying 2.3 trillion dollars, was unaccounted for in the Pentagon on September 10, 2001. I remember seeing 2 incredibly built skyscrapers implode identically on September 11, 2001. Last night I was told that my America was his concern every morning and that no Terrorist attack has occurred since the first one. Instead of hijacked airplanes, Sub-Prime Mortgages and Derivatives were used to accrue vast amounts of inflated capital which got pulled like WTC 7.

Yep, Nothing Foreign about it. Purely Domestic Assault.

But to rebut last night better, here is

Still Delusional After All These Years

Related Topics:

huffingtonpost.com — The speech was spin at its most dangerous. It's easy to feel a pang of pity for a guy who was on top so long and is now heading out the door. But the more sympathy he evokes, the more susceptible we are to the lies he is telling. Before we know it, his revisionism becomes accepted as the truth. So, if there was any value in the speech it was this: it should remind us of the importance of refusing to allow this delusional revisionism to stand.

Anaplastic Astrocytomas Adventurer

Like to sleep alot which I am told is to be expected, part of the healing from the Radiotherapy. Which will take up to a year. There is a straight line down the middle of my head where the hair stops growing. Nothing from the Center to the Right, there is Comedy written all over that without even trying.

When the hair does grow back supposedly between 3-6 months from now it'll have a different texture and color; I'm imagining a blond Halfro.

Am doing ok tho. Compared December 2nd MRI's with July 22nd MRI's and saw a reduction in size of the three tumors; which is what is supposed to happen.

The Left side of my body is slowly coming back but I'm told to anticipate recovery from the Craniotomy on my Right Pre-Motor Cortex to take about a year. Social Security has approved me for disability assistance, and has informed me that I will be reviewed in three years, because they believe my condition will improve. Hmmm, one can see that as pretty Motivational or the ultimate Deadline.

I 'll take Motivational for 50 more , aw heck make it a 10o, 'cuz in addition to beating the cancer, my left rotator cuff needs to be reconnected, then my left distal radius needs to be reconstructed. 2008 had its' not so great moments, however, may 2009 be better than fine,

Getting Forked

In Chess We call it a Fork, where the opponent is given the choice of losing a piece after their next move and the choice is theirs! Sometimes one can set an opponent up into a series of forks, thereby commanding the direction of the game and invariably picking without mercy the place of Checkmate. I've seen me do it and I've seen it done to me. Emotions will rise and fall. Heart rates increase, sweat furrows brows, Attention Deficit Disorder is no excuse. Psychological gambits have been known to be used but are frowned upon. Yes there is Chess Etiquette Which has no semblance to Rove /Machiavelli Etiquette, which precludes this rewrite of history before leaving office The Bush Legacy.
